Work while studying in Germany
As an international, you can work up to 120 full days or 240 half days in a year. However, you cannot work as a freelancer or be self-employed. In case if you wish to work more, you will need to get permission from the Federal Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) and the Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde).
There is an exception; if you work as an academic assistant in Germany, you will face no work-days restrictions because there is no limit on working days for academic assistants. In addition to this, if you pursue a language course, you may only be able to work after getting permission from the Federal Employment Agency as well as the foreigners' office.
Work after graduating in Germany
As per the DAAD, around 40% of international students choose to stay back to apply for their Post Study Work Visa in Germany. The International experience that you could gain by working there will undoubtedly prove to be beneficial for you in the long run. To find a suitable job, you can extend your Residence Permit (RP) by up to 18 months after completing your study program. However, you will have to demonstrate that you can cover your living costs and will work in the area relevant to your qualifications. In other words, you will not be able to work there as a waiter or any other job for which you have not got any training. During this period, after finding relevant employment, you will be able to stay there for an additional two years, with a possibility to extend your visa for multiple times. If you completed eight years in Germany, then you will be eligible for applying for Citizenship, provided you fulfill all the eligibility requirements, including the German language.
